SignSpeak is an advanced cross-platform American Sign Language (ASL) recognition platform designed to bridge the communication gap between the Deaf community and technology. It leverages state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning pipelines, combining MediaPipe hand tracking, CNN-based image classification, and an optional YOLOv5 detection layer to achieve accurate, real-time sign recognition at over 30 FPS. The system is engineered with scalability in mind: a React Native (Expo) mobile app provides seamless cross-platform support, while a Python Flask backend—enhanced with OpenCV, scikit-learn models, and Dockerized deployment—ensures reliable performance from local development to production. Beyond recognition, SignSpeak also supports session recording, data export, and continuous model improvements, making it not just an app but a robust AI research and deployment framework for sign language understanding.
